Draft 1

Do you find it unfair that money is the reason you won't be able to learn like everyone else? This is because  our national education system is corrupt. In areas of lower economic status schools will be more prone to be run down and have less equipment to learn with. After reading “Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Education” By Jean Anyon and “Savage Inequalities” Written by Jonathan Kozol. They both discuss how different economically affected areas can have an impact on a student's ability learn. By examining the conditions of poor schooling areas one can show that people of lower social class will struggle to become successful.
After reading Jean Anyon’s article “ Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Education”,  it led me to believe that this is actually going on to this day even though the article was written in 1980.  She has a large background within education and has taught a lot in different schools around new jersey. She discusses many different types of schools, The working class school, middle class school, affluent professional school, and the executive elite school.  The working class schools students came from a lower economic status then most students. In school they had no ability to make there own decisions. Middle class schools your work had to be correct by following the directions. here you had a little more decision making and had to do some thinking on there own. Affluent professional schools focused alot on creativity and students can freely express their own ideas and apply it to their work.  Executive elite school was for the highest of the economic social class. the students have the ability to reason through their problems and create high quality academic products. Anyons experiences in these types of schools made her categorize them into the sample schools.

I agree with Anyon due to the fact that she has experienced different teaching environments throughout her career. I also have been to different schools in different economic circumstances. I went to middle school in a poor community and then later on in highschool I attended Jackson Memorial High School which was in a much weather area. At Jackson I was much free in making my own decisions on how i wanted to my assignments. “In the classroom, the children could get material when they needed them and took what they needed from the closets and from the teacher's desk”(Anyon 10). In the executive elite school schools the kid were free to use whatever tools they needed for their assignments. In my school it was very similar. All the students gained trust from the teaching staff and were able to use the expense equipment and borrow any tools we needed. I don't really think in lower economic class schools students had privileges like this.

quotes from seperate, still unequal:america educational aparthied

1.Many educators make the argument today that given the demographics of large cities like New York and their suburban areas, our only realistic goal should be the nurturing of strong, empowered, and well-funded schools in segregated neighborhoods.

2.Higher standards, higher expectations, are repeatedly demanded of these urban principals, and of the teachers and students in their schools, but far lower standards—certainly in ethical respects—appear to be expected of the dominant society that isolates these children in unequal institutions.

3.One of the most disheartening experiences for those who grew up in the years when Martin Luther King Jr. and Thurgood Marshall were alive is to visit public schools today that bear their names, or names of other honored leaders of the integration struggles that produced the temporary progress that took place in the three decades after Brown v. Board of Education, and to find out how many of these schools are bastions of contemporary segregation.

Response to Jean Anyon

Jean Anyon did research on schools of different social class. I believe that schools in different social classes teach differently based on on your social class. I find this true because growing up i moved a lot. This was because we lived in a poor social class environment, and as my mom worked harder and got a better job we moved to much safer and more higher social class areas. When I lived in a poor environment I went to school where everyone was just like each other and was the same economic status. they thought differently than most schools but us not knowing this thought is was normal. We weren't aloud to be creative or be independent. It was always group work.  As I climbed in social class so did my education. I went on to higher level of schools. When I went to Jackson Memorial Highschool everyone was the same economic status. everyone was wealthy and living comfortably and was i . In school we had to be independant and always used critical thinking in our work. Anyone I think anyone research is correct even though it's from a very long time ago. I still think that discrimination of education because of social class still exists. The students that know about this find it unfair and the student who have no clue about it seem to think it's normal because they haven't had experiences of being thought differently. If I could change one thing about the research I would change the year. this is because if you made it a more present year then it wouldn't matter because this topic is still relevant. Her research didn't consider where the teachers come from. maybe if we knew where the teachers live and computed from we would have a better understanding of why they want to teach the class like this.

quotes from students right to their own language

"the claim that anyone dialect is unacceptable amounts to an atempt of one social group to exert its dominance over another."
"....the dialects of their nurture or whatever dialects in which they find their own identity and style."
"a nation proud of its diverse heritage and its cultural and racial variety will preserve its heritage of dialects."

Language in writing

There shouldn't be any boundaries to a students language. Students in  an academic setting should be able to use any proper standard language or words in there writing. As a teacher you can really affect a students writing when you tell them to not use there language. By examining teachers that don't teach students how to property incorporate language into there writing toner can show that a clear use of language can make  a writing better.
Students proper use of language language can make there paper more unique. when a student has to incorporate themselves in there writing they wanna be true too the reader. in most academic settings students really don't incorporate there language or even slang. they feel like it doesn't sound proper. it could also be because teachers don't teach how to properly put language in ones writing.
This is a big part of making great writing. students should be able to use there slang, cultural language, and any means of personal expression in there writing when in an academic setting. i don't think students should use it in very formal and research based writing in work settings. This is because the use of language wont help there writing and it wont be clear for t he reader to understand. If the writing is not clear then it is not good writing. This is why students should be taught to use it properly to produce clearer work.

Reading repsonse question

Zahir Hassan

1. Anzaldua is at the dentist and is having a hard time to control her tongue from interfering with the dentist tools while he is working on her teeth. this can be related to the rest of the essay becuase every were she goes she encounters problem with people that hear her speak her language.
2. Her use of Spanish is for her friends and family and anyone else who understands it. she doesn't want to be surrendered by a border for her use of language.
3.no it cant be. this is because what is standard to us might not be standard for them.
4. yes speaking  and writing in academic English is important for our identity . it is necessary because.your culture will help influence your writing and who you act with others in your surroundings
5. British English is the English people from England use. American English is what we use in our daily lives.
6.i don't use a secret language when i talk to my friends.
7.when i speak to my mother or professor i speak a very respectful sort of English. when i speak with my friends i speak more of a slang version of English. this is because people deserve respect because of who they are, and also id o respect my friends but we communicate like that because its easier to understand each other because we are so close to each other.
8. this means that when she speaks her language it brings out her true self. this can be connected to someones identity because the way you talk will show who you truly are.
9.in the begging when she is in the dentist the doctor is telling her to stop moving her tongue but she keeps on moving it. in the end when she says she will overcome the silence it can be connected because if someone does tell her not to talk the way she wants to then she will ignore it and continue to do as she wants.
10. yes it can because the way you speak can show how you behave around others and can show if you have accent where are you from.
11.it is really important to have identity because it shows how different we are from the other 7 billion people that are on this earth. to her it is important to have identity you can tell when in the book she is in her class she gets in trouble when the teacher messes up her name and then tells the teacher to pronounce it correctly.

Getting to know zahir

My name is zahir hassan. Growing up people had a hard time to pronounce my name. My name wasn't as common as my friends Mike and James were. Growing up people gave me nicknames instead of saying my actual name. There were many nicknames, but the one that stuck was "Za". It was simple and unique. This nickname stuck to me for a very long time and know all my friends just call me "Za". When we played backyard sports i met new people everyday and without question people introduced me as "Za". I never played a team sport in my life, because my parents worked alot and weren't able to drop me to practice everyday. I am very passionate about bodybuilding. When it comes to my free time I am mostly spending in the gym working out by lifting weights and doing cardiovascular exercises. when working out i like to lsiten to music rap music. my specific favorite artist are j cole and kendrick lamar. When i write at my computer i like to listen to music while i write. i just start to write what comes off the top of my head. when it comes to writing if i had to grade myself i would give myself a "c" because i don't think I am the worst writer but i just don't like to write so i don't write to my fullest potential.my writing experience during high school was just like anyone else. i did my work on time and did what i was told. my teachers did offer me multiple times to revise my essay and i did take advantage of that to achieve a higher grade. i never learned the 5 paragraph structure but i knew how spell words properly and use proper grammar rules. From transitioning into an adult as a teenager i still use my social media accounts. i still use Facebook, snap chat, twitter, and Instagram. Know that im in college i must set goals to achieve. best goals are small goals that wok up to a big long term goal. for this semester i want to become more of a college  student and be able to use all the vast amounts of knowledge i will receive and also having a good time.
